Missoula County supports HB 342, Create SWAMP special revenue account, up for hearing this afternoon in the House Natural Resources Committee. The SWAMP (Surface Water Assessment and Monitoring Program) Program is set up primarily to monitor stream flows throughout the state to complement the U.S. Geological Survey’s efforts. DNRC runs this program. Through it, the state can supplement the loss of USGS stream gauges, which are so important. DNRC is able to monitor these sites affordably and makes the data available (some real-time) on their website. DNRC has two real-time monitoring sites in Missoula County (Rattlesnake and Lolo Creek) and nine data recorders monitoring groundwater and surface water elevations up Lolo Creek and the Blackfoot. All of this data is publicly available and is valuable for water planning, drought management, fisheries, water rights, etc. Additionally, from an emergency management perspective, more information related to stream flows assists in decisions related to public safety.
