Missoula County supports HB 15: Revise laws related to nonmotorized vehicle and mobile home disposal, as amended, on the Senate floor this afternoon. This bill would give counties flexibility to use some of their junk vehicle funds to address the growing problem of abandoned mobile homes that are run down and falling apart, as well as wrecked pull-behind campers and trailers. We currently cannot use junk vehicle funds to address these eyesores, which also pose threats to public health and safety. The cost of running a junk vehicle program varies from year to year, depending on the number of complaints received, effectiveness of compliance efforts and the price of steel. In years that we have fewer expenses, we could effectively use the remaining funds to benefit the community by picking up and disposing of derelict mobile homes, campers and trailers that have been abandoned by their owners and are well beyond their useful lives.
