Revise youth access to tobacco products control act

Comments

  1. Sent morning of Feb. 4:

    Representatives Curdy, Olsen and Sullivan,

Missoula County supports HB 312, Revise youth access to tobacco products control act, up for hearing this morning in the Business and Labor Committee. This bill prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol, in stores that allow youth; prohibits the sale of tobacco products through self-service displays; and restricts vending machine sales to cigarettes only. Tobacco use continues to be the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Most new smokers (59 percent) were younger than 18 when they first smoked cigarettes, and 37 percent of smokers were under 18 when they started smoking daily, highlighting the danger of youth initiation. Among new smokeless tobacco users, almost half (47.4 percent) initiated use before 18. Flavored tobacco product advertising targets youth, and this bill would reduce youth access to those flavored tobacco products.

    Please support HB 312.
