Generally revise gun laws

    Representatives Keogh and Morigeau,

Missoula County opposes HB 322: Generally revise gun laws, up for hearing tomorrow in the House Judiciary Committee. The Missoula County Sheriff’s office process numerous requests for concealed weapons permits each year. As part of that process, there is a requirement to conduct a background check through the state and national criminal information system. This system returns results based on similarity between the name and date of birth entered as the request. Often, common names such as Smith, Jones, or others return multiple potential matches. In many of these cases, the social security number provided on the application can rule out a potential match by the system. Without this information it is possible that many people who would normally qualify for a concealed weapons permit would be denied because the issuing agency would be unable to rule out these potential matches.

    Please oppose HB 322.
