Missoula County opposes HB 208, Establishing family medical leave insurance, as currently written, up for hearing Monday morning in the Business and Labor Committee. While Missoula County supports the concept of family medical leave with the goal of providing a safety net during an extended illness of an employee or family member, HB 208 would have unintended impacts to local governments. Local governments are required by statute to provide sick leave benefits, which can already be applied to cover the intended uses in HB 208. HB 208 would create a doubling of this benefit through a new tax, the burden of which would be placed on local property taxpayers.
