Missoula County opposes HB 396: Prohibit public employees from using position to support/oppose campaign, up for hearing in the House State Administration Committee tomorrow morning. Missoula County and the Missoula County Attorney’s Office take any misuse of a person’s office or employment for political purposes very seriously. But the parameters around those activities are already well-defined by existing laws, Attorney General Opinions, and opinions by the Commissioner of Political Practices. If passed, this bill would broaden the scope of prohibited activities for employees and unelected officers in areas that may infringe upon first amendment rights and make enforcement challenging.
