Require health warning for raw milk sales

    Senators,

Missoula County supports SB 230: Require health warning for raw milk sales, up for hearing on the Senate Floor this afternoon. Unpasteurized milk is strongly associated with severe foodborne illness, which is why it is a public health hazard. Montana has mitigated this hazard over the last three decades by prohibiting commercial sales of unpasteurized milk. If the legislature passes a bill this session allowing the sales of unpasteurized milk, which we do not advise, the customer needs to be clearly informed of the risks. Just telling someone that a product isn't inspected or that the operator isn’t liable of illness is not the same as letting the consumer know that drinking unpasteurized milk presents a higher risk of severe illness, especially for children, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system. SB 230 ensures that any unpasteurized milk sold in Montana will have adequate point-of-sale labeling. Regardless of your position on unpasteurized milk sales, please support SB 230. Thank you, Senator Sands, for carrying this bill.

    Please support SB 230.
