Revise aviation fuel taxation

    Representatives,

Missoula County opposes HB 661: Revise aviation fuel taxation, on the House Floor this afternoon. Currently, Missoula has airfares that are 20% higher than the national average and Montana is among the lowest per capita in income. If passed, this bill would implement a 14-cent tax on aviation fuel for airlines. Flight routes to and from Montana are much longer than other places, meaning that a 14-cent tax adds up quickly and dramatically increases costs for airlines. Asking the airlines to pay a tax will cause them to further increase airfare rates, which would negatively impact Montana businesses and travelers.

Great progress has been made over the years by communities and airports across the state to recruit additional air service, which causes competition and lowers airfare. Lowering airfare is essential for helping existing business grow and getting new businesses to relocate to the area. Implementing this tax would undermine and undo years of hard work and good faith efforts on the part of people across our state.

    Please oppose HB 661.
