Missoula County supports SB 338, Provide for construction of Montana Heritage Center and create museum grants, on the Senate floor this afternoon. This bill would provide another potential funding source for the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. HMFM staff care for 20 historic structures that span the history of Montana and tell the story of several important aspects of our state’s heritage, including the forest products industry, Fort Missoula’s history, and the alien detention center that interned 1,000 Japanese and 1,200 Italians at the Fort during World War II. If passed, SB 338 would make $2 million a year available for historic preservation projects. With many of our historic structures in need of restoration or long-term preservation, this bill could provide much-needed funding for our projects. Not only would SB 338 support the Montana Historical Society, it would benefit all of Montana’s museums.
